King’s Day 2018

You’re going to need a bigger boat…

Heads up! This Friday is King’s Day, when the whole of Holland turns into one big party. Koningsdag is officially the national celebration of the birthday of the King, but really it’s just an excuse to have a massive beano. The celebrations take place all over the Netherlands, but Amsterdam is the biggest open-air festival by a country mile.

We make no excuses for the complete absence of the team at Office Twelve Amsterdam. They’ll be knee-deep in music, dancing, street food and orange wigs.

Go Willi!

Undeterred by his royal status, as a student, Willem-Alexander was a bit of a lad. He drank a lot of beer, earning himself the nickname ‘Prins Pils’ and once drove his car into a canal in Leiden.

On king’s day, all street trade in Amsterdam is completely unregulated. This is retail on acid. The vrijmarkt (literally ‘free market’) gives everyone and their mum the chance to sell their second-hand things on the streets and parks of Amsterdam, creating one of the world’s largest flea markets.

There’ll be parties, gigs and events going on all over the city. Find out what’s on this year.

Expect canal gridlock, beer, music and plenty of boterkoek.
